The 40lb Difference: How Jonathan Heuker Became a Two-Way Standout

Jonathan Heuker decided to get serious about football following his Junior season at Unity Christian. He began training at PowerStrength fresh off getting cut from the basketball team.

That was before he added 40 pounds of muscle. Before he went from barely playing as a Junior-  to becoming a two-way starter as a Senior on a team that reached the state finals. And well before he earned the chance to keep playing football in college.

It started with a conversation with his dad.

THE BEGINNING

Getting cut from basketball, Jonathan says now, “may have been the best thing that ever happened to me.”

He asked his dad if he could try PowerStrength, did a free athletic assessment, and never looked back.

He wasn’t walking in blind.

“I had some teammates and friends from school who came here before, and they had seen results,” he said. “I looked at them and said, I want to have that. I want to look like that.”

THE TRANSFORMATION

Over the next year and a half, Jonathan put on 40 pounds.

“Good weight, not fluff, mostly muscle,” he said.

And the weight wasn’t the only thing that changed.

“I got faster as I came here, and obviously stronger with the weight,” he said.

FROM THE SIDELINE TO THE FIELD

Junior year, Jonathan barely played.

“I was mostly a special teams player, kickoff and kick return,” he said.

Senior year looked nothing like it. He started both ways and earned All-Region honors at defensive end, helping his team reach Ford Field.

He remembers the exact feeling of the shift.

“Last year, when I got in, I would get off the ball, and I wouldn’t really go anywhere,” he said. “This year, I was driving people — moving people.”

WHY IT WORKED

Ask Jonathan what separates PowerStrength from everything else, and he doesn’t start with the workouts themselves.

“The biggest thing I’ve seen at PowerStrength is that they do a really good job of holding you accountable,” he said. “Are you pushing yourself in the weight room, but also — are you recovering well? Are you eating enough? Are you sleeping enough? Are you actually putting on weight?

He also points to the mentality the gym builds.

“I just like the energy that all the trainers bring, and the guys and girls who come here. PowerStrength has done a really good job of building a friendly environment where you can come and get some good work in.”

THE MENTAL SHIFT

The physical changes brought a mental shift.

“Being bigger absolutely helps with confidence, both on and off the field,” Jonathan said. “I look at myself, and I see results, and it keeps building that confidence.”

He gained significant muscle between his junior and senior seasons — and that made a difference.

“It gave me the confidence to go out there and make plays.”

Looking back, his only regret is not starting sooner.

“If I had started sooner, I can’t imagine where I’d be now.”

READY FOR THE NEXT LEVEL

Jonathan is set to keep playing football at Calvin University this Fall, and he’s already thinking about what that jump requires.

“You might have been that guy in high school, but in college, everybody was that guy,” he said. “It’s a level playing field. It’s just going to come down to who puts the most work in, who gets bigger, better, faster.”

ADVICE TO THE NEXT ATHLETE

For any younger athlete weighing whether to walk through the door at PowerStrength, Jonathan doesn’t hesitate.

“I would say do it. It’s worth it. You see results — you see it pretty quick — and it just gets you ready for whatever you’re doing.”

Jonathan is proof of what happens when an athlete decides to control what they can control and make a commitment to putting in the extra work.

“PowerStrength is the place to get better,” he said, “and be held accountable to get better, by good people and with good people.”
