A GAME-CHANGER: HOW TWO WEST MICHIGAN ATHLETES TRANSFORMED AT POWERSTRENGTH

Last Summer, athletes across West Michigan took a shot at something that could change their trajectory when they entered the Athlete Transformation Giveaway.

Two athletes in particular  – Gavin Bouma (Class of 2027, South Christian Football & Track) and Luke Tubergen (Class of 2026, Unity Christian Basketball, committed to Calvin University)  – took full advantage of their opportunity.

And what happened next is exactly why parents continue to trust PowerStrength with their athletes.

GAVIN BOUMA: FROM UNDERSIZED TO IMPACT PLAYER

When Gavin first walked into PowerStrength, he had already been a Varsity football player as a Sophomore.

But he knew something was missing.

“I played, but I didn’t make many meaningful tackles.”

That changed fast.

Over the course of his training:

  • Bodyweight jumped from ~172 lbs to 210 lbs
  • Significant increases in strength and speed
  • Confidence skyrocketed—on and off the field

And it showed up where it matters most.

“After doing a whole Summer with PowerStrength, I had a lot more tackles and played better.”

That’s transformation being transferred to the field.

What’s even more telling?

“After football season, I told my parents I wanted to get back in PowerStrength the next week.”

No hesitation. No convincing needed.

CONFIDENCE IS THE DIFFERENCE-MAKER

Gavin didn’t just get bigger and faster.

He became a different athlete – and person.

“Not even just as an athlete, walking down the hallways, I feel more confident.”

That confidence translated directly to performance:

  • More aggressive play
  • More production on the field
  • Bigger impact in games

And now?

He’s building toward his Senior season with the goal of playing college football.

LUKE TUBERGEN: FROM CUT IN 8TH GRADE TO COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Luke’s story might be even more dramatic.

  • Didn’t play in 6th or 7th grade
  • Cut from the 8th grade team
  • Limited playing time as a Junior

Fast forward one year and he came into his own.

After training at PowerStrength:

  • +40 pounds of muscle
  • Increased vertical and explosiveness
  • Became a Varsity starter
  • Earned All-Conference honors
  • Helped Unity Christian reach the State Championship game
  • Committed to play at Calvin University

That’s a complete trajectory shift.

“The added strength and explosiveness helped me dominate, without that, I probably wouldn’t have made All-Conference.”

SIZE + STRENGTH + EXPLOSIVENESS = OPPORTUNITY

At 6’9”, Luke always had size.

But size alone doesn’t translate.

Strength does.

“Having that extra muscle allowed me to push people around and make more of a difference.”

And just like Gavin, confidence followed.

“It gave me the confidence to know I’m one of the strongest on the floor.”

That’s when things change:

  • Coaches trust you more
  • You earn minutes
  • You produce
  • Opportunities open up

WHAT PARENTS SEE (THAT ATHLETES DON’T ALWAYS SAY)

Luke’s parents, Josh and Ann, saw the shift immediately.

Not just physically—but mentally.

“Confidence was huge,” Josh said, “but also actual gains. You don’t always see that in a weight room.”

They also pointed out something most Parents overlook:

Measurement matters.

“Here, they measure muscle, speed, vertical,” Ann said. “Those are big differences.”

And just as important:

Environment.

“The coaches are incredibly positive. The athletes are working hard. It’s not just going through the motions.”

WHY THIS WORKS

Both Gavin and Luke always worked out and worked hard.

The difference was:

1. INDIVIDUALIZED TRAINING

No ‘cookie-cutter’, “one-size-fits-all”  programs.

“It’s specialized for my sport and my height.” – Luke

2. HIGH-LEVEL ENVIRONMENT

Athletes training alongside serious peers – including college athletes.

“That gives you confidence.” – Gavin

3. COACHING THAT CONNECTS

Athletes are known on an individual level, pushed, and developed.

“They remembered me, they care about you.” – Gavin

4. COMPLETE ATHLETIC DEVELOPMENT

Not just “lifting”:

  • Specialized strength training
  • Speed development
  • Explosiveness
  • Movement quality

FROM TRYING IT… TO TRUSTING IT

The Giveaway got them in the door.

The results made them hungry for more.

“It’s intense,” Gavin said. You’re getting your money’s worth. You’re getting stronger, faster, more confident.”

“It helps in every area of athletics,” Luke added. “It’s very much worth it.”

From both athletes and parents, the message is consistent:

This is an investment that delivers.
