Total Gym-Beginner to Confident: How Alberto Gained Strength and Knowledge

At 67 years old, retired and looking toward the future, Alberto Gutierrez knew he wanted more than just to stay busy — he wanted to stay strong, healthy, and active as he aged.

Jogging and yoga had always been part of his routine, but he had never once stepped foot into a weight room.

When he saw that PowerStrength offered a Personal Training Program for Adults in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, something clicked.

“I always try to do something physical for myself,” Alberto said. “And PowerStrength came to my attention because the sign said it’s 40 plus. I’m 67. So I said, maybe this place is right for me. I decided to join because I think they’re taking care of older people. I’m retired, so I’m trying to do something different in my life. I’m always trying to be in good shape.”

OVERCOMING INTIMIDATION

Despite his determination, Alberto admits his first steps into the gym weren’t easy.

“I was a little skeptical to come in here because I had never lifted weights,” he recalled. “I was intimidated. But in the end, I convinced myself to be part of this. So far, it’s great.”

The PowerStrength coaches worked closely with Alberto from the start, guiding him through proper form and helping him build confidence with every rep.

“All the coaches here are helping me to erase these barriers and help me learn to lift, because I never lifted weights,” he said.

STRENGTH, ENERGY, PROGRESS

5 months later, Alberto’s progress speaks for itself.

In June, during a members-only muscle gain challenge, he put on 1.8 pounds of lean muscle — something he had never imagined possible before starting.

“I’m happy to be here because at my last check, my muscle increased,” Alberto said with a smile. “I’ve been able to see this progress in my body. I’m very motivated to keep moving forward and be stronger. I’m 67, but 67 is no restriction.”

Beyond the physical gains, Alberto has noticed his energy soar.

“I have more energy, he said. “I’m drinking more water, eating more protein, and just learning so many new things. The equipment, the workouts — all of this is brand new for me. It’s good motivation.”

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

For Alberto, the friendships and support system have been just as impactful as the workouts.

“It’s so beneficial because you know everybody here,” he explained. “You have a very good friendship with all the other people, with the coaches. This is why I’m here, because I enjoy the environment.”

A NEW CHAPTER OF STRENGTH

Perhaps most importantly, Alberto now embraces challenges he never thought possible.

“To put 20 pounds in each hand on the bench press or to squat with 50-pound dumbbells — it’s a challenge for me,” he said. “I keep learning the right positions, the right posture. It’s a challenge every day, and I like that.”

Looking back, he knows what he would tell his former self before walking through PowerStrength’s doors:

“Be open-minded. Learn new things. There’s not only one way — just running or doing yoga. This is a different field in your life that you have to learn.”

And his advice for anyone else considering PowerStrength?

“I think it’s the right place for mature people,” Alberto said. “It’s a different way to learn and to keep your body healthy. I’m glad to be here, and I want to keep learning.”

At 67, Alberto is living proof that it’s never too late to start, never too late to get stronger, and never too late to invest in yourself.
