This weekend, some of West Michigan’s best high school teams and players will be showcasing their skills at The Invite at Calvin University, and PowerStrength is proud to be part of the action once again.
With 12 games scheduled, including Freshman, JV, and Varsity matchups, it’s going to be a full day of exciting hoops from start to finish.
Freshman and JV games kick-off the day at 10:00am – and Varsity games featuring 4 highly anticipated matchups:
- 2:40 p.m. – Grandville vs. Holland Christian
The Bulldogs are led by 6’7” senior wing Anthony Richardson, who poured in 26 points in a season-opening win over Lowell, and 6’2” junior point guard Carter Wade, who is one of the top floor generals in the 2027 class in the state.
The Maroons are led by Titus Spencer, a 5’11” senior point guard who can score as well as he facilitates, and HC has excellent size with senior forwards Davis Alderink (6’5”) and Jake Holcomb (6’5”).
- 4:20 p.m. – West Ottawa vs. Grand Rapids Christian
The Panthers have a young and talented squad with sophomores JT Gill (6’0” point guard), Darien Stewart (6’7” forward), junior Makai Campos (6’0” guard), to go along with senior Quentin Edwards (6’1” guard), who transferred from Allegan.
The Eagles are led by Purdue Fort Wayne signee Carl Thompson, the 6’2” senior guard scored 30 points in the season opener against South Christian. 6’7” senior forward Connor Johnson has signed with Northern Michigan, and 5’10” junior Braylon Taylor, son of 8th-year head coach Eric Taylor, runs the show for GRC.
- 6:00 p.m. – Rockford vs. Unity Christian
The Rams are not only one of the best teams in West Michigan, but the entire state. 6’6” Senior forward Josh Bascom has signed with Central Michigan. He and 5’9” guard Dylan Gross, are 3-year varsity players. Eli Wolfe (6’2” guard) and Josh Bascom (6’3” forward) are talented sophomores in their 2nd year on varsity, and Jace Opoku-Agyeman (5’11” guard) is one of the top 2029 players in the state. Junior Drew Ferwerda (6’6” forward) adds size, strength, and poise for the Rams off the bench.
The Saders have arguably the most experienced team in head coach Scott Soodma’s tenure. 5 seniors are in their 3rd year on varsity: Kyler Berghuis (6’2” guard), Brogan Sherd (6’0 guard), Jack Kamminga (6’4” forward), Cody Walters (6’2” guard), and Owen VanderWaal (6’7” forward). Berghuis, Kamminga, and VanderWaal will all be playing on their future homecourt as all 3 are committed to play at Calvin.
- 7:40 p.m. – Northview vs. Grand Rapids Catholic Central
The nightcap is a rematch of the game 2 years ago that saw the Wildcats clip the Cougars 70-67 on a buzzer-beating 3-point shot from current WMU sophomore guard EJ Ryans. EJ’s younger brother Cam had 23 points in that game as a sophomore. Now a senior, Cam (6’4”) is set to join his brother in Kalamazoo after signing with Western Michigan last month. He leads the charge for Northview under 1st-year head coach Brandoen Guyton. Senior Tyris Thomas (6’2” guard), junior Anthony Willis (6’3” guard), and junior Izzy Hatibu (6’4” forward) help make the Cats one of the area’s best teams once again.
CC will not have Northern Michigan signee Zay Larthridge (6’6” guard), who will miss the season with an injury, but 2nd-year head coach Chris Pearl still has plenty of talent led by 3-year varsity starters in seniors Jordan McCoy (6’0” point guard) and Brieland Watkins (6’2” guard). Fellow seniors Tyrese Moody, Collin Lott, and Colt Rockwell help make CC a must-see squad this winter.
The level of talent on display will be incredible, and the environment is second-to-none in West Michigan, making it a fun day for the whole family!
