At PowerStrength, we believe that building stronger people goes far beyond the training floor. It happens at home, in the car after practice, at the dinner table — and it starts with the adults in a young athlete’s life.
That’s why we hosted the PowerStrength Parent Talks event and were honored to have Hall of Fame high school football coach Noel Dean as our keynote speaker.

Coach Dean has spent over 30 years in the coaching profession, winning three state championships and pioneering the Pink Arrow Project — a charity game that became a movement. But what makes him truly remarkable isn’t his win-loss record. It’s how he sees people.
The central question Coach Dean kept coming back to was a simple one:
What am I trying to accomplish in this particular moment?
It sounds straightforward, but when you sit with it, it changes how you show up.
On the drive home after a tough game. On the sideline. At the dinner table. The pressure parents place on young athletes — even unintentionally — often shows up in ways we don’t expect. A look. A tone. A conversation overheard at work or with a neighbor that your child quietly filed away.
One of the most powerful reminders of the evening was this: your child gravitates toward what you celebrate. If we praise effort, humility, and lifting others up — that’s who they become. If we focus only on performance and results, we risk raising athletes who tie their entire worth to a scoreboard.
Coach Dean challenged every parent in the room to ask themselves honestly: What do I celebrate in my child?
He also spoke on the noise that defines youth sports today.
Unlike decades past, parents, kids, and coaches are now swimming in rankings, social media comparisons, and outside opinions. In all that noise, one of the most important things a parent can do is protect the credibility of their child’s coaches and teachers. How you talk about them at home shapes whether your child can be coached at all.

And then there was the 10-Year Test — perhaps the most clarifying idea of the night.
Will this moment matter in a decade? If not, let it go. If yes, handle it with care. It’s a filter that cuts through the heat of the moment and brings perspective back.
Coach Dean’s words were a powerful gift to this community, and we are grateful to everyone who showed up for the conversation.
At PowerStrength, we don’t just train athletes. We invest in people. Events like this are a reminder of why that mission matters — and why we are proud to serve the families of West Michigan.
