Kirstine Johnson woke up on the eve of her 58th birthday and decided something had to change.
She was pre-diabetic, low on energy, and starting to feel aches and pains creep in.
A little over a year later, her labs are normal, her energy is back, and she’s walking farther and feeling better than she has in years.
Her birthday present to herself that year wasn’t a trip or a gift card — it was a membership to PowerStrength’s Personal Training Program for adults in their 40s, 50s, and 60s.

THE START
Kirstine had never set foot in a gym for her own benefit in her entire life. What changed her mind was a conversation with a friend and neighbor who’d already started.
“I woke up on the eve of my 58th birthday. I was pre-diabetic, low energy levels, aches and pains starting to creep up,” she said. “I decided it was time for a lifestyle change.”
Her friend had been going to PowerStrength for a few weeks and loved it.
“She was making it sound pretty good, so I decided my birthday present to myself would be joining the gym.”

Even with her mind made up, the first step wasn’t easy.
“The hardest step truly was walking in that door,” she said. “One of the coaches met me right there, and it made it so much easier. I felt like I was in the right place — and I’ve been here ever since.”
THE MEASURABLE CHANGE
Kirstine gave herself a three-month trial to see if the program was the right fit. It didn’t take long to know the answer.
“I’ve seen so many big changes — no longer pre-diabetic, my labs are all good now,” she said. “The scale looks better, my clothes fit better. It was an amazing gift to myself.”
Beyond the numbers, she’s noticed a shift in how she feels day to day.
“I feel accomplished. I feel good in my body. I feel like I’ve got energy, and I’m balancing better. It’s been one of the most beneficial things I’ve done in my adult life.”
One moment stood out early on.
“There was a moment where I wasn’t so stiff getting out of bed anymore,” she said. “Those first three months were some of the most beneficial. I stayed — we’re 13 months in now.”
LIFE OUTSIDE THE GYM
For Kirstine, the real proof of her progress shows up on the trail, not just in the gym.
“My husband and I hike and walk a lot — we walked 250 miles in Portugal a couple of years ago,” she said. “Now my knees feel better, my hips feel better, I can go longer, and I’m not out of breath going up a hill.”

THE DEEPER WHY
Kirstine’s motivation to keep training goes beyond how she feels today — it’s about the kind of aging she wants for herself.
“I live in a 55-and-older community — more like 75 and older, really,” she said. “A lot of my neighbors have wheelchairs, walkers, canes. I don’t want to be that person at 75 or 80. I want to be able to walk without any kind of aid.”
It’s a reality she says she thinks about often.
“The reality dawns on me every morning when I open my curtains and see my neighbors out and about.”
THE COACHES AND THE COMMUNITY
Kirstine credits the coaching staff with meeting her exactly where she started — and then pushing her past what she thought she was capable of.
“When I first started here, they met me where I was at, which was not very far,” she said. “They’ve continued to meet me where I’m at. They don’t push me beyond what I can do — but they also push me beyond my perceived limitations. I would still be at 10 pounds if it hadn’t been for the coaches.”

The relationships she’s built have become just as important as the training itself.
“We kind of have our own little 9:30 a.m. gym peep group,” she said. “All of that has contributed to what makes this such a wonderful experience. I’m excited to come here.”
AN INVESTMENT IN HER HEALTH
The friend who first recommended PowerStrength to Kirstine described it as an investment in her health — and Kirstine says her own results have proven that true.
“My numbers, my labs, all that prove that it is an investment in my health,” she said. “I’m doing really good as far as my doctors are concerned.”
THE REGRET
Kirstine watched the gym get built before she ever walked through its doors — and looking back, she wishes she hadn’t waited.
“I saw this gym go up and kept driving past it, thinking, why do we need another gym?” she said. “I wish I’d started earlier. I wish I had started when I retired, eight years ago.”
Her advice to anyone considering it now is straightforward.
“Give it a try. Give your body a chance,” she said. “Even just make that small one-month commitment, and you’ll start seeing differences after that.”
Asked to sum up what PowerStrength has meant to her, Kirstine didn’t hesitate.
“PowerStrength is life-changing,” she said. “Absolutely life-changing.”
