Greg Hewitt’s story is one of perseverance, transformation, and a rediscovered passion for life through strength training at PowerStrength Training Systems.
A father of two, Greg knew how important it was to stay active and engaged with his kids. But a lingering shoulder injury made that impossible. He couldn’t fully rotate his arm, which kept him sidelined from playing sports with his children.
“That was hard,” Greg said, “especially having kids chasing them around, and not being able to continue to play catch, lift, do things with my son. He’s in eighth grade now, and so I needed to get past it, and I tried physical therapy. It worked a little bit, but not real well.”
Frustrated with his limitations, Greg sought help. His daughter, Olivia, who is now playing lacrosse at Messiah University, had been part of PowerStrength’s athlete program and experienced tremendous success, so Greg decided to try the Personal Training Program for adults in their 40s, 5s, and 60s.
“When I came here, I had a shoulder injury and couldn’t hardly even do a full rotation on my arm,” Greg said. “I had watched my daughter, she was a three-sport athlete at Rockford, come through here and saw the gains that she made, and thought maybe these guys can straighten me out . So I gave it a shot.”
He had tried physical therapy, which provided limited relief, and had attempted other fitness avenues including just Googling “what’s a good workout” to figure things out on his own, but nothing worked like he hoped.
GAME-CHANGER
Greg began his journey at PowerStrength without knowing what to expect, except that he hoped to regain some mobility in his shoulder. The results were nothing short of amazing. After just 6 months, he was completely pain-free and able to do the activities he loved with his kids once again.
“Yeah, pain-free, full range of motion,” he said.
“It was unbelievable, it definitely made sense to come here and to hook up with you guys. I’ve told everybody, you gotta go and listen to the coaches and if you have any aches or pains, let them know, because they’re gonna listen to you and get you going down the right path.”
The biggest surprise for Greg was the effectiveness of band and resistance exercises. It was a turning point for him, as these exercises built strength and mobility in ways he never thought possible.
“I don’t really think I expected the changes in all the different types of exercises that we do,” he said. “All the band and different resistance stuff that we do here is phenomenal. That was something I’d never been a part of or never tried before, it was always just straight weights, so that’s always really good, and make sure you get a good stretch before you work out, we always have a good group stretch in the morning.”
Originally, Greg thought he might just train for a few months, get his shoulder fixed, and move on. But as he began to notice his progress, not only becoming pain-free but also getting stronger, he found himself hooked.
“I figured it would have been a three-four month thing, come in, get the shoulder feeling good, and then then go on and just do my thing, but it’s addicting. You get here, and the energy level is high, music is cranked, you start to know people, and you kind of rely on each other and push each other, hold each other accountable to always be here. It’s a fun group, and the coaches definitely mix it up and keep you motivated as well.”
Two years later, Greg is still training at PowerStrength, hitting personal records regularly, and feeling better than ever.
“Strength-wise, I’ve made huge strides,” he said. “I’m stronger now than I’ve ever been, even when I was younger, playing sports, it’s been good.”
A FOCUS ON NUTRITION
Strength training isn’t the only area where Greg has seen improvements. Inspired by the culture at PowerStrength, he’s also focused on cleaning up his diet and cutting out junk food. With an eye on getting lean and maintaining his health long-term, he’s adopted healthier habits that complement his training.
“The culture that the coaches bring and that they’ve developed, I think they each have their own kind of family feel to it, and the camaraderie between the coaches, and the way that they push you and they get everybody together, it’s huge motivation.”
The community at PowerStrength has been another catalyst for Greg in his journey to being healthier and happier.
“When you’re in here every day, I’m a six o’clock guy, so you got that core people that are here every week with you working out with you, so you push each other and every day is almost like a mini competition coming here and trying to make each other better.”
BEYOND STRENGTH
Greg’s story is more than a physical transformation, it’s about reconnecting with his family and finding joy in activities he once couldn’t do. From being able to throw a ball with his son to enjoying time outdoors without pain, strength training at PowerStrength has given him a renewed sense of vitality.
“I can’t thank (PowerStrength) enough, it’s two years, a lot longer than I thought I’d be here, but it’s been an awesome experience, and I look forward to keep coming,” Greg said.
His journey shows that it’s never too late to get stronger, healthier, and rediscover the things you love. As Greg continues to break personal records and improve his health, his story serves as a testament to the power of consistency, expert coaching, and a supportive community.
