For 30 years, Melanie’s schedule belonged to somebody else.
During the day, she worked in banking. At the same time, she built and operated a successful children’s consignment business, Just Between Friends, that serves families across West Michigan.
For years, both jobs ran side by side.
There was always something that needed her attention.
Exercise was something she squeezed in when she could.
Taking care of herself usually came last.
“I never took time for myself,” Melanie said. “I worked in banking for 30 years and owned my own business for 12. I did both of them at the same time.”
In May of 2025, Melanie stepped away from her banking career. For the first time in decades, she had something she hadn’t had much of before.
Time.
Around that same time, a friend and neighbor introduced her to PowerStrength.
“It was my time to try this out and see how it works.”
A year later, she’s stronger than she’s ever been, more confident in her abilities, and investing in herself in a way she never had before.

A DIFFERENT KIND OF INVESTMENT
Melanie had exercised before.
She had taken fitness and spin classes, worked out at home, and even lifted weights on her own.
But she had never worked with a coach.
Like many adults in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, she wasn’t always sure if she was doing things correctly.
Was her form right to keep her safe and healthy?
Was she progressing the way she should be?
Was she getting the most out of her effort? Or wasting her time?
At PowerStrength, she no longer had to figure it out by herself.
“I really like the attention that we get from the coaches,” she said. “They watch your form and make sure you’re doing your reps correctly.”

The small-group format stood out immediately.
With only a handful of people training at a time, the coaches could focus on each individual member.
“They’ll push you, but they won’t push you to the point of hurting yourself,” Melanie said. “If it looks like you’re doing too much, they’ll back you off and focus on your form.”
For someone who had spent most of her life figuring things out on her own, having expert guidance made a bigger difference than she expected.
STRONGER THAN SHE’S EVER BEEN
One thing still surprises Melanie.
“I’ve lifted more weight than I’ve ever lifted in my life here,” she said.
The results have gone far beyond the gym.
At her most recent assessment, Melanie had added two pounds of lean muscle mass.
But what matters most to her is how she feels during the physically demanding weeks when her business is in full swing.
Twice each year, her children’s and maternity consignment event takes over 70,000 square feet of space. More than 1,000 sellers participate. There are tables to move, racks to unload, inventory to organize, and long days spent almost entirely on her feet.
A lot of long days, heavy lifting, and physical work.
“We’re in the venue for about 110 hours,” she said.

The events haven’t changed, but her body has.
“I’ve definitely noticed the difference in my body over the last year.”
The work that once felt more exhausting feels more manageable.
The long days feel different.
The physical demands feel different.
She’s stronger, and she knows it.
THE CONFIDENCE THAT COMES WITH STRENGTH
Ask Melanie about the biggest change, and she doesn’t immediately talk about muscle.
She talks about confidence.
“I just feel more confident in the things that I need to do when I need to go and lift heavy things,” she said.
That confidence shows up in everyday life when work needs to get done.
She realizes she is capable of things that once felt intimidating.

Her family has noticed too.
“My husband and my kids have said they can tell I’ve gotten stronger,” she said.
Even her massage therapist saw the difference.
“She said she could really tell the strength difference in my legs and that I had more muscle tone than before.”
One of Melanie’s sons is finishing his doctorate in physical therapy. Today, they find themselves having conversations about training, strength, and movement that never would have happened a year ago.
“We’ll talk about different lifts and the weight that we lift,” she said.
Those conversations and the confidence behind them are new.
GETTING AHEAD OF THE CURVE
As Melanie looks ahead, she knows she wants to keep running her business for years to come.
But she also understands something many adults don’t think about until it’s too late.
Strength matters more as you age, not less.
That’s become one of her biggest motivations.
“I think as women age and lose muscle mass, it’s very important to get ahead of it,” she said.

She isn’t interested in waiting until something goes wrong.
She doesn’t want to spend years trying to recover lost strength.
She’d rather build it now.
“Focusing on you now is more important than waiting until something happens, and now you’re backpedaling, trying to catch up.”
For someone who spent decades taking care of everyone else first, that’s become an important lesson.
Investing in herself isn’t selfish; it’s necessary.
WHAT SHE’D TELL YOU
If Melanie could talk to someone who is putting themselves on the back burner, she’d encourage them to start now.
Not someday.
Not when life slows down, or the timing is perfect.
Now.
Because strength isn’t just about the weights you’re lifting – it’s about confidence and independence.

It’s about being able to keep doing the things you love for years to come.
And the sooner you start building that foundation, the better.
“PowerStrength is a way for me to focus on my confidence,” she said. “To focus on what matters most to me right now as I age, which is gaining muscle strength and being able to see improvements in my body.”
Melanie is investing in herself, and it’s reassured her that some of her best years are still ahead.
