Local Mom Finds Comfort, Results at PowerStrength

As a mother of two, Michelle Fox had understandable reservations about joining a gym.

She tried a few things in the past, a couple classes at the YMCA, but nothing stuck. Nothing seemed to be the right fit.

After her 11-year-old son, Jacob, started at PowerStrength Training Systems (PSTS) in the 5th-8th grade program – Michelle thought it was the right time to give the PSTS adult personal training programs a try since it caters to people over 40.

“I don’t really like new things,” Fox said, “but I thought, being that it was the 40-and-over, it would make it more comfortable than going somewhere where there are a bunch of 20-year-olds.”

Over 90% of members in the adult program at PowerStrength are over the age of 40 so the sessions and environment are customized to the main 40-65 year-old crowd.

TRAINING ACCOMMODATIONS FOR ADULTS OVER 40

PowerStrength has personal training programs catered to adults over 40 with a friendly environment for all fitness and ability levels. Michelle learned that quickly.

“Everybody is just like us,” Fox said. “Everybody has the same cracking joints when you get up and it is a really comfortable place to be. I thought I would be pretty out of shape, but not so much.”

Each member works closely with a personal trainer and gets exercises specifically prescribed for their needs and goals, helping to scale the intensity of the session for each individual and their current fitness level.

And while PSTS trains plenty of youth and high school athletes – they never intermix. Every adult session is in a separate designated area to create a comfortable, focused environment.

THE RESULTS

Michelle had two major goals when she started at PowerStrength just 3-months ago: lose weight and gain muscle.

“It’s been 3 months and I just continue to build muscle and lose fat, pant sizes just keep going down and down, I have a lot more energy, it is just a lot healthier.”

Michelle deserves so much credit. Her consistency and dedication have been incredible.

Her trainer Alex says –

“Michelle is the definition of dedication, consistency and hard work. She shows up to each session with an amazing attitude and work ethic, always looking to be pushed and better herself. I always enjoy getting to coach her. She not only pushes herself, but also those around her.”

Alex continues, “ Along with her training routine, she has dialed-in her nutrition as well since joining (PSTS) and it has led to some incredible results. She has increased her strength tremendously, while also decreasing her body fat. This takes a lot of self-discipline to achieve and Michelle is crushing it.”

UNEXPECTED REWARD

Michelle has also received an added bonus at PowerStrength – an even stronger bond with her son.

Their workouts and exercises now become a focal point of conversation and fun competition.

“He always is like ‘well how many did you do on the sled today?” And he comes in and I talk to the trainer and he tries to get them to do one more, he thinks he is as strong as some of the grownups, but he’s getting there,” Fox said. “We are always trying to one up each other. He always comes home and is like ‘how much did you bench press today?’ And I am like ‘I don’t know,’ so it is all about competing with him.”

“They are always going back and forth on who can pull more on the sled,” says Alex. “It’s not often you see a mom and her son bonding and talking smack over training exercises that they both do – it’s awesome.”

The healthier lifestyle and additional strength has also given Michelle a chance to get back to doing one of her previous exercises, running.

Jacob also recently took up the sport, and now she gets to join him on the trails.

“It gives me motivation,” Fox said. “He started cross country this fall for the first time and that too made me want to get back into running, I had run a couple marathons 5, 6, 7 years ago and I wanted to get back to running and he encouraged me to get back, ‘mom, go for a run with me,’ then I couldn’t, but since, he and I run 5k’s all the time together.”

Deciding to take control of her health and fitness is yielding so much for Michelle! It takes work and isn’t always easy. The example she is setting for her family is amazing and worth the effort!
