With the college semester coming to a close and high school winter break around the corner many young people are discovering what happens when procrastination meets deadlines. We’ve all done it. And we all know the terrible feeling. Wishing you had more time is all you ask for.

Or maybe you never procrastinate and are usually well prepared. But do you ever get that uneasy feeling that maybe you could’ve done more? Studied a little longer. Paid better attention. Lifted a few more weights. Practiced a few more shots?
How do you know when you’ve done enough? How do you know when you’re on the right track? Everyone has the same amount of hours in a day. How do you know if you’re making the most of your precious time?
Working with many athletes of all ages and levels I’ve seen and heard many things when it comes to preparation and procrastination. If you’ve ever been on a football field during the first padded practice when the hitting drills start you know which players put in the time in the gym during the off-season and which ones sat in the air-conditioned basement. Or better yet, you can tell which kids trained for 6-months compared to 6-weeks.
To those of you who want to stand out, who want to be a special athlete, who has high aspirations of the next level (whatever that level may be), check out the list below and be honest with yourself. Are you preparing yourself or merely dreaming?
1) You actually train during the off-season- preferably harder, smarter, and more often than the competition.
2) You still train during a sports season- you know great athletes are always training.
3) You say you want to improve and put a plan in place to do so- seeking out others who can help you.
4) You set goals for yourself and are dead set on achieving them.
5) You work because YOU want to, not because someone is forcing you.
6) You make sacrifices others won’t.
7) You are always focused and paying attention- nothing slips past you- being surprised isn’t always a good thing.
8) YOU KNOW YOU AREN’T ENTITLED TO ANYTHING.
9) You plan your schedule around your training- if you must miss; you have already planned an alternative.
10) You take ownership of your opportunities and privileges others may not have.
11) You don’t make excuses or feel sorry for yourself.
12) You test your body and mind every day and push yourself because YOU want to be great. Every day you WIN a small victory that leads to your main goal.
13) You go hard and to the limit even if no one is watching.
14) You are open to coaching and learning from those who’ve done what you’ve done and have been where you want to go- you soak up everything and apply it.
15) You surround yourself with individuals who build you up and support your goals.
16) You don’t let the critics and haters bother you. What they say can only be fuel for so long- if you don’t want it bad enough yourself then nothing else matters.
17) You spend the extra time doing the little things, or do a little extra every day even though you don’t always want to- you know it will all add up.
18) You look around and see what everyone else is doing- you either do the opposite, or do more…you don’t follow the crowd- the crowd is mediocre. The crowd sucks.
19) You make your goals, work ethic, and attitude a LIFESTYLE.
Our athletes at PowerStrength are a different breed. Many of them follow this list above. Many also have much room for improvement and they’d be the first ones to admit it. But what makes them different is they’re actually doing it! They aren’t simply talking about it or wishing it. Taking ownership of what you want your future to be like has nothing to do with anyone but yourself. You have to look in the mirror and answer to the face staring back at you every day.
So, are you prepared? Are you doing enough?
