PowerStrength 2018 NFL Pro Day Class

The time of year is upon us where football players end their college chapter and start a new one as they pursue their dream of playing professional football. The destination could be the NFL, CFL, AFL – or somewhere they didn’t anticipate, which is usually how these uncontrollable journeys go. How the story ends is oftentimes unknown.

“When opportunity knocks, it’s too late to prepare.”

This is the mindset that dictates the approach to our Combine and Pro Day Training Program at PowerStrength. This 8-10-week preparation period reveals a lot about the athlete – both physically and professionally. Our goal is to prepare each athlete to perform every combine test to the best of their ability, while also preparing them as athletes to perform on the field.

In West Michigan we attract a lot of blue-collar athletes who typically are from D2 or D3 schools. No matter the college level, we require a certain attitude and commitment in our athlete vetting process. We will provide a professional approach to the daily details that are necessary to fully prepare our athletes. There are always a lot of frills and ego-driven attributes in combine programs around the country. We simply believe that anything that is unnecessary, causes a distraction, or plants any sense of entitlement; we eliminate out of our comprehensive program.

The collection of athletes we have in the 2018 Class all checked the boxes of professionalism and commitment. Many of them were raised right here in their hometowns of West Michigan and that matters to them. They are a hungry and humble group that are quietly working. They know that their success will be their noise.

Stay tuned for more updates about our Pro Day athletes and their progress. You can also follow along through social media @PowerStrengthTS.

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

The two things that make me stand out are my preparation and leadership. Investing time for physical preparation is a top priority, but I also make sure I am staying mentally sharp through things like visualization of plays and relaxation exercises. I’m also a natural leader. I thrive in a position of leadership on and off the field, and I am not afraid to take charge when no one else will.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

What I’ve enjoyed most about training at Powerstrength for my Pro Day are the other guys in the group as well as the coaches. The people at Powerstrength create an atmosphere that holds you to an incredibly high standard, while also making sure you enjoy the process. I have already seen significant improvement in my speed, strength, and nutrition because of the top-tier coaching and likemindedness of the guys in our group.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Smart. Athletic. Violent.

Other Athlete Notes

Jake has been a member of PowerStrength since high school and it shows up in his preparation. He started 4 years at LT for Hillsdale and was a 2x Team Captain. At the National All-Star Game he showed his versatility as he played across the entire offensive line – Tackle, Guard, and Center. Jake is a very athletic, durable linemen that will run very well at his Pro Day for a lean, 300+lb athlete. Jake has the intangibles of an NFL lineman and will be a great ambassador of the game for any team.

Donte Carey

Position – Defensive Back

College: Grand Valley State University

Ht: 6’0

Wt: 205lbs

High School: Ottawa Hills

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

The thing that helps me stand out on the field is my ability to lead and my willingness to be vocal. Communication is a key component of any defense. The same thing goes for life in general, I’m extremely easy to talk to and I’m a natural born leader.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

The thing that I enjoy about training at PowerStrength is the honesty. The trainers aren’t going to paint a pretty picture for you, they’re going to be completely transparent. That’s extremely important to me because progress starts with the truth.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Fast. Violent. Disciplined.

Other Athlete Notes

Donte is one year removed from GVSU and spent time in the Cleveland Browns camp last year, with another NFL workout this past winter. He is a student of the game and his experience shows in his preparation. Donte played both corner and safety in college. He has NFL or CFL aspirations. To be transparent, being the type of athlete and person he is, we can’t believe he’s not linked up with an NFL team. Donte is long, strong, and powerful. He entered 5-weeks ahead of this years’ class and is still improving every week.

Jahaan Brown

Position – RB/Returner

College: Ferris State University

Wt: 205lbs

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

My strengths since being at Ferris State have always been my unselfish attitude – whether I’m getting the ball or not. I am able to block like an extra lineman out on the field – but with better hips. I also have a lot of patience as a runner allowing me to capitalize quickly when the crease opens up. Something that separated myself from other talented backs is that I am extremely comfortable catching passes coming out of the backfield. I have so much passion for this game that I spent hours in the office with the coaches learning why defenses do what they do so I am better prepared.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

The thing I enjoy the most is that we have a small group of guys and everyone wants to see the next person succeed just as much as we want ourselves to succeed. Mark and Skyler have so much knowledge about getting stronger, and talking about the little things to help prepare us so we’re at our best.  It really makes you focus on everything to make you a better, faster, and stronger player.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Relentless. Consistent. Tough!

Other Athlete Notes

Jahaan is a back from one of the nation’s best D2 offenses. A tremendous athlete, he is going to turn heads at his Pro Day as he demonstrates his quick burst and explosiveness. His highlight tape will show you his burst when he sees a small window. Jahaan has a lot of tread on the tires and is going to make any NFL or CFL organization very happy with his ability and professional demeanor. Along with Kenny and Ja’Juan (below), these 3 complete the 90+ minute round-trip commute 4x per week from Big Rapids to Grand Rapids as they finish their college degrees.

Keane Belcher

Position – Defensive Line – N/DT

College: Grand Valley State University

Ht: 6’3

Wt: 295lbs

High School: Grand Rapids Catholic Central

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

What makes me stand out both on and off the field is that I am committed to the process. No matter what I put my mind to, I will always work as hard as I can to be the best that I can be. Whether it’s showing up early, doing what I’m supposed to do, and dedicating myself to put the work in and growing in every aspect. Lastly being mentally strong, coachable and humble.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

I’m enjoying the process. Coming in every day and getting after it, being taught proper technique and seeing my numbers increase. As well as working with other athletes from other institutions just makes everything that much better as we are constantly competing with one another.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Savage. Relentless. Consistent.

Other Athlete Notes

Keane has made huge strides during his first month of training both in his speed and body composition. He picks up every detail and applies it, setting the foundation for a solid future career along the defensive front. Keane has a high-motor on the field for being such a large athlete and is far from a “sloppy” lineman. He converted to the D-line in college after playing all over the field in high school.

Kenny James

Position – Defensive Back

College: Ferris State University

Ht: 5’11

Wt: 205lbs

High School: Rock Bridge, Columbia, MO

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

My WHY makes me stand out. My life struggles inspires me to strive for greatness. The work ethic and passion I possess allows me to stand out on and off the field.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

What I enjoy most about training for the pro day at PowerStrength is the process. I live by the motto, “Trust The Process” and I have seen a big difference in my body and mind within 4 weeks.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Smart. Physical. Passionate.

Other Athlete Notes

Kenny started his college career at Southern Illinois before heading to Ferris State and was SIU’s leading tackler in 2015. He is an experienced player and it shows in the way he roams in the secondary. Kenny is a worker and dedicated to being the best person and athlete he can be. So much of pro football goes beyond the physical. Kenny has a great sense of self and controls what he can control in the process like a pro. He commutes 90+ minutes 4x/week to train with Jahaan and Ja’Juan – they have never been late.

Ja’Juan Pollock

Position – WR/Slot/Returner

College: Ferris State University

Ht: 5’9

Wt: 185lbs

High School: Manatee High School, Bradenton, FL

Highlights: https://www.hudl.com/video/3/406422/5896bbe602bb791b88214fb6

What makes you stand out both on the field and off?

My understanding of route combinations and great route running combine with the ability to get open. This includes getting off the ball in press coverage and finding soft spots in zone coverages, while having great hands and speed to make plays. Off the field I’m very relaxed person and spend time conversing with friends and family. I enjoy volunteering at hospitals and physical therapy facilities to help further my understanding in the physical therapy field.

What do you enjoy most about training at PSTS for the Pro Day so far?

I enjoy that they aren’t one of those really fancy facilities with all the big-time names, etc… they get the job done… that’s in every meaning of the word “job”. If you have questions about anything with training, nutrition, Pro Day’s, workouts, and all – they have a good answer for you. I enjoy the fact that they would rather work with a small group of athletes to make sure everyone is getting the right coaching rather than accept anyone. I really appreciate the hospitality.

If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?

Instinctive. Bold. Fun.

Other Athlete Notes

If you put on Ja’Juan’s tape you’ll see that he can make plays from a variety of positions. Quick and smooth, Ja’Juan came up north from Florida to be part of the prolific offense at Ferris State. He has big hands and is strong compared to other slot receivers. After his senior campaign was cut short, he is healthy and preparing for when any opportunity knocks. Don’t let his relaxed personality fool you, Ja’Juan is always competing with himself or others. He commutes 90+ minutes 4x/week to train as he completes his degree.

Rudy Coston

Position – Running Back

College: Davenport University

Ht: 5’11

Wt: 213lbs

High School: Forest Hills Northern

Other Athlete Notes

Rudy returns to PSTS after training with us when he was in high school. He just recently joined this year’s class as he prepares for CFL tryouts later on this spring. Rudy’s unique path of college ball has taught him a lot that transfers to the field, training, and his preparation. He is a powerful, strong athlete who has a passion for the game and the process.
